How to get rid of dandruff in dreadlocks?

My cousin just got dreadlocks and he's already complaining about an itchy scalp and flakes. What's the recommended way to get rid of dandruff specifically in dreadlocks? He's a bit clueless.

My mother always tells me that any heavy hair style needs extra care to avoid moisture buildup. With dreadlocks, dandruff can get trapped deep inside the locks, which is very difficult to clean. While simple herbal rinses help, it is always best to trust a doctor's recommended residue-free anti-dandruff spray.

Having dreadlocks is cool until the dandruff starts making your head look like a snowy mountain range! Normal shampoos won't work because they leave too much residue inside the locks. Use a clear, watery tea tree spray instead, unless you want your dreads smelling like a damp basement!

I have seen cases where patients with locked hair ignored scalp itching, leading to deep fungal infections and permanent hair thinning. Because locks trap moisture, they are a breeding ground for microbes if not dried completely. Please consult a dermatologist before the infection spreads deeper.

Treating the scalp when you have dreadlocks requires a residue-free approach, as thick creams will get trapped inside the hair shaft. A liquid-based antifungal scalp solution is usually recommended. Speaking to a clinical expert will help you find a treatment that doesn't ruin your locks.

I just started getting dreads and the itchiness is driving me crazy, is this normal for everyone in the beginning? I am so worried that the dandruff will get permanently stuck inside the twists. Has anyone else successfully cleared dandruff without untwisting their hair?

With locks, the most crucial step is ensuring your hair dries completely after every single wash, even if you have to use a hood dryer. Trapped moisture is the number one cause of scalp flaking here. Use a dilute apple cider vinegar spray on the scalp, massage gently, and dry it thoroughly.

You can try a very light rinse with lukewarm neem water to soothe the itching and keep the scalp clean. But do remember, if you see any pus, swelling, or extreme pain, these home remedies can make things worse. Go to a hospital and get a proper medical wash immediately.

Since locks make it very difficult to inspect the scalp closely, you might miss signs of severe inflammation or psoriasis. It is highly recommended to have a professional dermatologist evaluate your scalp. Don't rely on internet hacks for complex hairstyles.
