I completely agree that the first few days after tightening are the worst. Eating cold yogurt or ice cream really helps numb the pain quickly.
Doing warm salt water gargles 3-4 times a day gives great relief to the sore gums. It is natural and safe. However, if the wire is poking your cheek and causing bleeding, please visit your dentist to get it clipped.

Dealing with chronic health issues like thyroid makes me very careful about any pain. I always discuss my symptoms with my dentist during regular monthly adjustments. Don't suffer in silence, let your doctor suggest safe pain relievers.
I remember crying on the first day of getting braces because my mouth felt so tight and painful. It is totally normal to feel anxious and frustrated. Just stick to very soft foods like khichdi and soup, it gets much better after 3-4 days.

The worst part of braces pain is not being able to chew golgappas or pizza! I survived on chilled milkshakes, fruit custard, and mashed potatoes during my braces days. Treat yourself to soft, yummy things to keep your mood up.
