How to get out of sleep paralysis?

Sometimes I wake up but can't move or speak, it's really scary. It lasts only a few seconds, but it feels like forever. My roommate said it sounds like sleep paralysis. How do you get out of sleep paralysis when it happens?

I totally get it, sleep paralysis is absolutely terrifying when you are stuck and cannot move or speak. Just remember in that moment that you are completely safe and it will pass within a minute or two.

When you find yourself unable to move, try to focus entirely on taking deep, slow breaths through your nose. Trying to wiggle just your pinky finger or toes helps wake your nervous system up gently without panic.

This usually happens when your sleep cycle is disturbed or you are sleeping on your back. Try sleeping on your side instead, and avoid caffeine late in the evening to prevent these episodes.

Stay positive and do not let fear take over during these moments. Just close your eyes, remind your mind to stay calm, and focus on slow breathing to gently transition your body back to wakefulness.

I used to panic and think my house was haunted when this happened to me. But once I realized it's just a temporary glitch between my brain waking up and my body sleeping, I stopped being scared and it happens much less now.
