How to get newborn to sleep in bassinet?

My little one just arrived and we got a bassinet for her, but she just refuses to sleep in it. She only wants to be held or in our bed. Any tips on how to get her used to the bassinet?

Beta, newborns want warmth like they had in the womb. Try warming the bassinet mattress slightly with a warm water bottle before putting the baby down, but always remove the bottle first. Traditional cotton swaddling also helps them feel secure, just make sure it is not too tight.

I completely understand how stressful this is, because the sleepless nights can honestly make you feel so anxious and overwhelmed. I used to cry thinking my baby would never sleep alone. Just take a deep breath, it is a very natural transition and you are doing a great job.

Don't panic at all, I was in the same boat and thought something was wrong with my boy. He would wake up the second his back touched the bassinet. Slowly we realized it is just a phase and they eventually get used to it by 2-3 months.

Please make sure your baby doesn't have silent reflux or colic, which makes lying flat very painful. I ignored my baby's constant crying when lying down thinking it was just stubbornness, but it turned out to be severe reflux. Get a quick checkup with your pediatrician just to be safe.

The trick is to put them down butt-first, then feet, and head last. If you lower them head-first, their startle reflex triggers and they wake up instantly. Also, keep your hand on their chest for two minutes after placing them down so they still feel your presence.

Before buying expensive fancy sleep monitors or changing bassinets, try cheap hacks first. Use your own worn t-shirt as a sheet cover so they get your scent, which costs nothing. Pediatrician visits and tests can get very costly, so plan these small home adjustments first to save money.
