How to get back to sleep in middle of night?

Often, I wake up around 2-3 AM and then just can't go back to sleep. It gets very frustrating, and then the next day is ruined. Any tips for how to fall asleep again quickly?

If this happens regularly, it might be worth talking to a doctor about a sleep study, though those can be expensive. For immediate relief, I find just focusing on slow, deep breaths helps without needing any fancy equipment or spending money.

Don't just lie there staring at the ceiling, that makes it worse. Get up for a few minutes, maybe read a boring book in dim light or sip some warm water. Go back to bed only when you feel sleepy again. This usually works for me.

My doctor explained that if you're awake for more than 20 minutes, it's better to get out of bed to prevent associating your bed with wakefulness. She suggested doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity in low light until drowsiness returns. Avoid screens entirely.

I used to really struggle with this and it made me so anxious. It's truly draining. Just know you're not alone. I found that not stressing about it and just accepting I'm awake for a bit actually helped me fall back asleep faster.
