How to get a high fever down?

My mother, who is quite elderly, has a really high fever right now, and it's making us very worried. We've given her paracetamol, but it's not helping much. How can we get a high fever down safely for an older person?

Having a high fever can be really scary and make you feel so anxious, I completely understand that. The first thing is to take paracetamol or ibuprofen as prescribed by a doctor or as per pharmacy instructions. Focus on resting and drinking plenty of fluids like water and ORS. If it stays very high or you feel worse, please don't hesitate to contact a doctor right away.

High fever? Don't mess around. Take a standard dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen. Hydrate aggressively with water, coconut water, ORS. Sponge bathe with lukewarm water, not cold. Wear light clothes. If it's above 103F or not coming down within a few hours, or if you have other severe symptoms, straight to the doctor or emergency. No delay.

Okay, for a high fever, immediate action is important. First, give paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen according to the dosage on the packet or as advised by your doctor, depending on age/weight. Then, focus on fluids – water, ORS, even clear broth. A lukewarm sponge bath can physically bring the temperature down. Don't use cold water. Light clothing is better than bundling up. If it's persistent, see a doc.

When my family gets a high fever, I immediately consult our doctor at Apollo/Fortis. They usually prescribe specific medicines and tell us exactly what to do. My advice would be, take a paracetamol tablet, and then call your doctor or visit a good hospital. They will do proper checks and guide you. Don't rely on random remedies for high fever.

Dekho, high fever is serious. First, take a paracetamol. Drink lots of water, nimbu pani, whatever fluid you can. Don't cover yourself too much. If it's very high or doesn't come down, stop sitting here and immediately go to the doctor, haan? Don't take risks.

I can't give medical advice, but when I get a high fever, I usually take the over-the-counter fever medicine I keep at home, and I try to drink as much water as possible. And just sleep it off. If it doesn't go down, then my family insists on seeing a doctor.
