How to ease sciatica pain?

My mother-in-law has been suffering from sciatica pain for a few months now, and it's really affecting her daily activities. We've tried some basic stretches, but it's not enough. Are there other ways to ease this pain for her?

My orthopaedic doctor explained that sciatica is basically a pinched nerve in the spine, so stretching randomly can actually make it worse. He told me to strictly avoid bending forward and prescribed specific nerve pain medication for the acute phase. Now I only do gentle extension exercises like the cobra pose after checking with my physical therapist.

Do not ignore this or try random YouTube stretches, you can end up damaging the nerve further. Go straight to a good spine specialist or a certified physiotherapist and get an MRI done if they ask. Regular core strengthening and proper posture are the only real long-term solutions here.

Honestly I was bedridden with severe leg pain just last month but I am totally fine now. What worked for me was using ice packs on my lower back for the first three days, and then switching to heat therapy. Don't sit in soft sofas at all, always use a firm chair with a small cushion behind your back.

I know exactly how draining this is because the pain just doesn't let you sleep or sit peacefully, it is so frustrating. Please don't lose hope, it takes time to heal but it definitely gets better. Just take it one day at a time, rest as much as you can, and don't feel guilty about taking a break from house chores.

If the pain is too much right now, just lie down straight on a firm mattress or on a clean mat on the floor with a pillow under your knees. Apply some warm mustard oil or a good pain relief ointment gently, without massaging hard. Take complete rest for two days and if the pain still doesn't go down, please visit the local hospital clinic.
