How to donate liver?

My uncle has been really unwell, and the doctors said he might need a liver transplant. I've been thinking about donating, but I don't know much about the process. Can a healthy person donate part of their liver, and what are the steps involved?

Liver donation is a major, highly complex surgical procedure, not something to discuss lightly on the internet. You must contact a certified multi-organ transplant hospital and speak directly with their transplant surgeons to understand the actual process and risks.

You are doing an incredibly brave thing, my friend. Just take it one step at a time, let the doctors do the screening, and don't stress too much—everything will work out fine!

Don't ignore even minor health issues if you plan to donate. Get a complete liver function test and ultrasound done first; I once ignored minor indigestion which turned out to be a gallbladder issue, so early checkups are always best.

According to the transplant surgeons I spoke with, a living donor can safely donate up to 60% of their liver. The remaining portion regenerates back to nearly its full size within a couple of months, but strict post-operative care and medical follow-ups are mandatory.

I totally get it, seeing a loved one suffer from liver failure is incredibly painful and you want to do everything to save them. Please make sure you also take care of your own mental health during this highly stressful testing process.

My elders always told us to help those in need, but we must trust the doctors completely. Before making any decisions, go to a reputed hospital like Amrita or Apollo, and let the transplant team evaluate if you are a safe match.

Beta, the liver is a miraculous organ that has the power to grow back, but the recovery requires utmost care. Drinking warm turmeric milk and eating fresh, home-cooked food will support your body's healing post-surgery, alongside the medicines doctors give.

To be a liver donor, you cannot have a severe fatty liver or uncontrolled diabetes, as this affects liver regeneration and recovery. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels through a strict low-glycemic diet is essential to qualify as a healthy donor.

If you are planning to donate to a family member, register at a government-approved hospital. They will assign a transplant coordinator who will guide you through all the medical compatibility tests and legal clearances step-by-step.

Be prepared for a significant time commitment, as the pre-donation medical tests, the actual surgery, and the post-op recovery will require you to take at least 4 to 6 weeks off from work. Plan your leaves and finances in advance before moving forward.

You need to be in peak physical condition to donate. Focus on maintaining a healthy BMI through regular cardio and strength training, as a high body fat percentage can lead to a fatty liver, making you ineligible to donate.
