How to differentiate copd and asthma clinically?

I'm a medical student and sometimes find it tricky to distinguish between COPD and asthma in a clinical setting, especially with overlapping symptoms. Are there any specific diagnostic markers or patient history points that really help differentiate them practically?

Clinically, COPD is usually progressive and seen in older adults with a smoking history, while asthma can start early in life and is often reversible with inhalers. Proper clinical testing by a specialist is always needed.

My doctor differentiated my condition by doing a post-bronchodilator spirometry test. In asthma, the airway obstruction improves significantly after using the inhaler, but in COPD it remains largely the same.

While gentle breathing exercises can support lung capacity, separating these two requires clinical expertise. Asthma often involves allergic triggers, whereas COPD is usually a constant struggle with breathing.

I suggest visiting a pulmonologist at a reputable hospital. Ask them clearly to explain your lung function test results and whether your symptoms point towards chronic bronchitis or asthma.

Both conditions cause severe shortness of breath, so self-diagnosing is very risky. Please consult a pulmonologist immediately to get a proper diagnosis via a lung function test.

I panicked thinking my severe coughing was COPD, but the doctor did a simple spirometry test and reassured me it was mild asthma. Don't worry, a specialist can easily clear this up for you.
