How to detect thyroid disease?

I've been feeling very tired, gaining weight unexpectedly, and my hair is falling out more than usual. My mother has thyroid problems, so I'm wondering how doctors usually detect thyroid disease.

My doctor explained that detecting thyroid disease involves observing symptoms and then confirming with blood tests. For hypothyroidism, look for fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, and hair loss. For hyperthyroidism, it's weight loss despite eating, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and heat intolerance. The primary blood test is TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone), sometimes T3 and T4 also. It's essential to get proper lab tests.

As someone who lives with thyroid issues, I can tell you it's tricky because symptoms can be very general. The key is noticing persistent changes. If you're suddenly gaining/losing weight, feeling constantly tired, experiencing mood swings, hair loss, or feeling hot/cold all the time, get your thyroid tested. Regular TSH tests are a must, and always follow up with your endocrinologist.

Thyroid issues? Oh god, is that why I sometimes crave ice cream at 3 AM or feel super sluggish even after a huge meal? Lol. Seriously though, if you're suddenly losing or gaining weight like crazy, or just feeling perpetually tired or anxious, it's probably your thyroid sending you signals. Get a TSH test done, that's what my friend said!

I had complications from an undiagnosed condition once, so I'm very cautious now. For thyroid disease, symptoms can be subtle and easily missed. If you're experiencing unexplained fatigue, weight gain or loss, feeling too cold or hot, hair loss, or mood changes, please see a doctor. A simple blood test (TSH, T3, T4) can confirm it. Don't wait for things to get complicated.

Unexplained weight changes, fatigue, and mood swings are common signs. A simple blood test checks it.

Yes, exactly! Persistent fatigue and unexplained weight changes are big indicators for thyroid issues. TSH test is usually the first step.

Just like with high BP, regular checkups and knowing your body are vital for thyroid. If you're facing persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes, feeling extremely cold or hot, or mood swings, these could be signs. Discuss these with your doctor, who will likely recommend a TSH blood test. Lifestyle also helps manage symptoms but doesn't replace diagnosis.
