How to count carbohydrates diabetes?

My doctor recently told me I have diabetes and need to watch my diet very carefully. He mentioned counting carbohydrates, but I'm not sure how to start or what that really means for my daily Indian meals. Any advice on this?

Counting carbs in an Indian household is a real test because mummy thinks a dry roti has zero calories and zero carbs! Actually, you just need a small kitchen scale to weigh your raw rice and atta once, then you can easily eye-ball it. Once you realize how much carb is in one mango, you'll start counting like a math genius!

With the rising cost of HbA1c tests and diabetes medicines, counting carbs is the best way to save money on your healthcare. I bought a cheap food scale online and looked up the carb values of basic foods like idli and chapati on free apps. Planning my meals this way has kept my sugar stable and reduced my clinic visits significantly.

Don't feel overwhelmed by the technical terms, it is much simpler than it looks. Just remember that things like rice, wheat, potatoes, and sugar are your main carb sources. Talk to your doctor or a certified diabetes educator who can give you a personalized plan according to your medication dose.

Honestly, measuring your portions with a simple katori helps a lot. It is a life-saver for keeping your blood sugar stable.

Managing diabetes for 15 years has taught me that carb counting is your best tool. One basic rule is that 15 grams of carbohydrates equals one carb choice or portion. You can find standard charts for Indian foods online, but always work closely with your diabetologist to match your insulin or tablet dosage.

I tried drinking bitter gourd juice and eating methi seeds for years, but nothing worked until I actually learned carb counting. I learned that swapping white rice for brown rice or quinoa, and limiting the portion size, made the biggest difference. Do consult your doctor first to understand your daily carb limit based on your medicine.
