How to commit a person for mental health?

My cousin has been showing some really concerning behavior lately and refusing to seek help. We're worried about their mental health. What steps can we take to help them get professional support when they're not willing?

Dealing with severe mental health crises in the family is exhausting enough to give anyone grey hair. The legal and medical process in India is quite complex, so don't try to play hero alone. Get a proper professional or a trusted family doctor to guide you through the paperwork.

When my thyroid levels were severely off, I had extreme mood swings that looked like a mental crisis. It is very important to get a complete medical checkup, including thyroid and vitamin tests, because physical issues can sometimes mimic psychiatric symptoms. Always consult a specialist first.

While keeping a calm home environment and offering home-cooked food helps with mild stress, a severe psychiatric crisis is a different matter. If a person is showing signs of extreme aggression or self-harm, please don't wait for home remedies to work. Contact a hospital immediately.

We panicked so much when our cousin had a severe manic episode and we thought we would have to forcefully hospitalize him. Fortunately, once we got a senior psychiatrist involved, they managed to calm him down with proper outpatient medication first. It is reassuring to know that hospitalization isn't always the first or only option.

Regular physical activity and nutrition are great for daily stress management, but acute psychiatric admission is a strictly medical and legal process. It must be handled entirely by certified psychiatrists and clinical psychologists who understand the legal protocols of the Mental Healthcare Act.

I had to help a close friend find a safe psychiatric care center during a major crisis, and it was emotionally so hard. The best first step is to contact a licensed psychiatrist or a reputed hospital with a psychiatric ward. They can guide you through the voluntary or involuntary admission rules.
