How to combat heat stroke?

The summers here are getting hotter every year, and last year a few people in our area suffered from heatstroke. I want to be prepared. What are the best ways to combat heatstroke, especially for elderly people at home?

First of all, stop roaming around in the afternoon sun unnecessarily. If you must go out, carry a water bottle and cover your head with a cotton cloth. Prevention is always better than falling sick.

During our college sports meet last year, a friend almost collapsed due to the intense afternoon heat. We immediately moved him to the shade, loosened his clothes, and gave him ORS water to sip slowly. It really helped him recover fast.

Drinking raw mango panna or barley water is excellent for cooling down the body in summers. But if someone is dizzy, fainting, or has a very high fever, please don't wait for home remedies to work. Take them to the nearest clinic immediately.

Heat exhaustion can escalate to a life-threatening heat stroke very quickly if the body's internal cooling system fails. If a person has hot, dry skin and is confused or semi-conscious, treat it as a medical emergency and call an ambulance immediately.

I got hit by a severe heat stroke during a field trip years ago. The most important thing is to lower the body temperature immediately using wet, cool towels on the neck and underarms. Avoid drinking ice-cold water suddenly, as it can shock your system.

If you love outdoor workouts, make sure you shift them to early mornings or late evenings during high-temperature months. Always check with your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions that make you more sensitive to extreme heat.

Always keep ORS packets or glucose powder handy in your bag during peak summer months. If you start feeling even slightly nauseous or headachey while out in the heat, sit down in an air-conditioned space and start sipping fluids immediately.
