My mother was recently told she has early-stage knee arthritis and I am quite worried about her. Does physiotherapy really help prevent it from getting worse, or will she eventually need surgery?

Agree with most tips here. Using knee sleeves during long walks has personally helped reduce my post-walk soreness.

My joint pain got much worse when my thyroid levels were fluctuating. I highly suggest getting a full blood panel done alongside your knee checkups, as hormonal issues can sometimes aggravate bone and joint pain.

It is tough to deal with constant knee stiffness, especially in the mornings. Please stay patient, keep doing your mild stretches, and don't exert yourself on painful days.
