How to check for cavities at home?
My dentist always finds a new cavity, even when I brush regularly. Is there a way I can check for cavities myself at home, maybe before they get too bad?

I used to panic about every little spot on my teeth, thinking it was a cavity! Honestly, at home, you can look for dark spots or small holes. Also, if a tooth suddenly gets super sensitive to hot/cold or sweet things, that's a good sign something might be up. But don't stress, many times it's just staining.
While a definitive diagnosis needs a dentist, you can do some basic checks at home. Look for visible holes, dark spots (brown, black, or even grey), or white chalky spots that can indicate early decay. Sensitivity to extreme temperatures or sweetness is also a common symptom. However, a professional dental check-up with X-rays is the most accurate way.
My dentist told me a few things to watch for. Firstly, check for any visible holes or pits on the tooth surface. Secondly, look for discolored areas – dark brown, black, or even white spots. Also, if you experience sudden sharp pain when biting down, or extreme sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods, it's a strong indicator. You can gently probe with a clean toothpick in places where food often gets stuck, but don't dig!
For us with diabetes, oral health is extra important. At home, you can check for unusual dark spots or if your teeth feel rough or 'sticky' in certain areas. Any persistent sensitivity, especially to sugary foods (which we try to avoid anyway!), is a red flag. But a proper dental check-up is a must, no matter what you see or feel.
Checking for cavities at home? Haha, unless you have X-ray vision like Superman, you'll need a dentist! But seriously, if you find yourself wincing every time you eat ice cream, or discover a little pothole in your tooth while brushing, it's probably time to book an appointment. Don't try DIY dentistry, you might regret it!
