For California specifically, you generally need a Master of Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program. Then you have to complete supervised hours of clinical experience, usually around 3000, and pass the licensing exam (LCSW). My therapist actually explained this pathway to me when I was curious about career options in the field.

Bro, if you want to be a mental health social worker in California, you definitely need that MSW degree. My cousin just went through it. After that, it's all about getting your supervised hours in and passing the licensing test. It's a long process, but totally worth it for the impact you can make.

Don't just read random blogs or forums for career advice, especially for something regulated like social work. Go to the official California Board of Behavioral Sciences website. That's where you'll get the real, updated requirements for LCSW. Everything else is just noise.

This is a great career choice, very impactful. Just make sure you research the specific requirements for California thoroughly, as licensing rules can vary. Get into a good MSW program and then focus on gathering your supervised hours. Don't rush the process, and seek mentorship.

It's a noble path to help others with their mental well-being. Focus on your studies and stay positive throughout the journey. Remember to also take care of your own mental health, as it's a demanding field. Good intentions and hard work will surely guide you.

While you're studying to become a social worker, make sure you fuel your brain with good food! All that intense learning definitely makes you crave snacks. Maybe some healthy nuts and fruits to keep you going through those long study sessions? Good luck, it sounds like a meaningful job!

Okay, so I did this! You need an accredited MSW first. After that, it's all about logging those 3200 supervised clinical hours (post-MSW) under a qualified supervisor. Make sure your supervisor signs off on all the specific tasks. Then you clear the California Law & Ethics Exam and the Clinical Exam. It's a grind, but totally doable if you're committed.

While this is a career question, it reminds me of how important credentials are. Just like I need to regularly check my thyroid levels and follow my doctor's specific advice, any professional path, especially in health, needs proper education, training, and licensing. Make sure you follow the official guidelines precisely.
