How to alleviate lactose intolerance pain?

I'm lactose intolerant, and sometimes even a small amount of dairy gives me terrible stomach cramps and bloating. It's really uncomfortable. What helps with this kind of pain?

Personally, when I accidentally consume dairy, drinking warm peppermint tea or ginger water really helps soothe my stomach cramps and bloating. I also switched completely to almond milk for my daily coffee, which saved me from daily morning stomach runs.

Do not feel sad about not being able to drink milk, my child. Our bodies naturally produce less lactase as we grow older. You can easily get your calcium from ragi, sesame seeds, and dark greens. Life goes on beautifully without dairy.

The only permanent solution is to identify your tolerance limit and read food labels carefully. Many Indian packed foods use milk solids or whey powder. If you must have dairy, take lactase enzyme tablets just before your first bite, they work wonderfully.

Please make sure it is actually lactose intolerance and not a milk protein allergy or IBS, as they have similar symptoms but different treatments. It is always safest to consult a gastroenterologist and get a proper diagnosis before changing your diet drastically.

If you are a fitness enthusiast struggling with protein intake, switch from normal whey to whey protein isolate, which has virtually zero lactose. Vegan protein powders like pea or brown rice protein are also excellent alternatives that won't upset your gut.

My daughter used to get severe stomach aches after drinking school milk. We stopped dairy milk and started giving her soy milk and oat milk instead, and she has been perfectly fine since then. Please watch out for hidden dairy in bakery biscuits and cakes too.

Instead of buying expensive imported lactose-free milks, just switch to homemade curd or buttermilk. The fermentation process naturally breaks down most of the lactose, making it much easier on the stomach and very light on the pocket.

Lactose issues are incredibly common now. Try keeping a food diary to see if butter or ghee also triggers your symptoms, as many people can tolerate clarified butter easily. Sip on warm water with a pinch of hing (asafoetida) to relieve gas pain quickly.

Don't listen to random internet influencers who claim they can 'cure' lactose intolerance with detox diets or raw milk. Lactose intolerance is a genetic lack of an enzyme, not a toxin issue. Talk to an actual clinical nutritionist to plan a safe diet.

It used to make me feel so left out at family weddings when everyone was enjoying paneer and sweets while I had to stay away. The constant bloating also made me very self-conscious. It is tough, but finding dairy-free alternatives will slowly give you your confidence back.
