How physical health problems affect mental health in elderly?

My elderly parents have been experiencing some health problems, and I've noticed they're also getting more anxious and withdrawn. I'm trying to understand if their physical ailments are making their mental health worse. How do physical health problems affect mental health in elderly people?

I was reading about this yesterday and it makes so much sense. When older folks lose their mobility or suffer from chronic joint pain, they can't meet friends or go for walks, which naturally makes them feel isolated and down. Physical independence is so deeply tied to our mood.

When physical health declines, even their digestion and appetite go down, which affects their overall brain health. I always make sure my elderly parents get light, nutrient-dense home-cooked meals to keep their gut healthy, as it directly impacts their mental peace. But we must support them emotionally too.

When elders have restriction on what they can eat due to health issues, it definitely takes away a lot of their daily joy! Imagine not being able to enjoy a simple hot samosa or sweet because of your health. That frustration easily turns into low mood and irritability.

I see this with my grandmother; when her knee pain increases, she gets so frustrated and anxious because she hates dependent on us. It is really tough on their self-esteem. Just spending half an hour talking to them can make a huge difference in how they cope with physical pain.

My father gets so grumpy when his back pain acts up, it is like dealing with a moody toddler! When the body doesn't listen to you at 70, it is bound to make anyone cranky. We just put on his favorite old songs and try to make him laugh to distract him.
