How old can you be to get breast cancer?

A friend of mine, who is quite young, recently got diagnosed with breast cancer, and it's made me a bit worried. I always thought it was something older women get. Is there any age that's too young to develop it?

Breast cancer can affect women at various ages, though the risk generally increases with age. While it's more prevalent in older women, younger women can also be diagnosed. It's really important for all women, regardless of age, to be aware of their body and consult a doctor if they notice any unusual changes. Regular self-exams and doctor's advice are key.

I'm still learning about these things. Is it true that even really young women can get it, or is it more of a worry when you get older? I feel like I hear about it more with older aunties. Should I start doing self-checks already, I'm only 26?

While the average age for breast cancer diagnosis is around 50-60, it's not exclusively an older person's disease. I've known cases in women in their 30s too. Awareness is your best defense. Pay attention to your body, do regular self-checks, and if anything feels off, just get it looked at by a doctor. No need to panic, but be vigilant.

The doctors at Manipal Hospital where I go always say that while age is a risk factor, breast cancer can occur in younger women too. It's not just an 'older' thing. They emphasize regular screenings and self-checks, and most importantly, to ask your doctor directly if you have any concerns. They can give the most accurate, personalized info.
