How often should a 6 month old sleep?

My 6-month-old has recently started solids, and it feels like his sleep patterns are shifting. I'm looking for a general guideline. How often should a 6-month-old baby typically sleep during the day and night?

For a 6-month-old, proper rest is crucial for development, just like good nutrition and activity are for us. They generally need around 14 hours of sleep total, split between nighttime and 2-3 naps during the day. It's like their recovery period for all the growth they're doing!

From my own experience, my 6-month-old was sleeping quite a bit, maybe 10-11 hours at night with one feed, and then two solid naps during the day, each lasting 1.5-2 hours. Every baby is so different though, so what worked for me might not be the same for you. Just observe your child's cues.

At 6 months, babies are getting more active, maybe even trying to sit up! This increased activity actually makes good sleep even more important for their growth. They generally need about 12-16 hours. Make sure they get enough playtime during their wake windows, and maybe a little fresh air too, if the doc says it's okay. Good sleep follows good activity, even for babies!

Oh, baby sleep, it's such a worry, isn't it? I always overthink if my child is getting enough. From what I've read and heard, a 6-month-old typically needs around 12-16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps. But please don't get too anxious if it varies a bit; babies are not robots. If you're truly concerned, a doctor can always reassure you.

I was just looking this up recently! For a 6-month-old, most sources say around 14 hours total, with maybe two naps. It's interesting how much it varies from newborn stage to this. But yeah, if you're ever really unsure, a quick consult with the pediatrician is always the safest bet.
