How much sleep is too much for a newborn?

My newborn sleeps a lot, almost all day and night, waking only for feeds. My mother-in-law is worried he's sleeping too much. How much sleep is considered too much for a newborn baby in their first few weeks?

Newborns typically sleep a lot, sometimes up to 14-17 hours a day, but usually in short bursts. If a newborn is sleeping excessively, like more than 4-5 hours at a stretch without waking for a feed, it might be a concern, especially if they're not feeding well. Always best to mention this to your pediatrician.

With my first baby, I was always wondering this! Newborns sleep a lot, like really a lot. But the main thing is that they should be waking up for feeds regularly, every 2-3 hours initially. If your baby is sleeping very long stretches and isn't feeding enough, definitely consult your pediatrician. Trust your instincts!

Haan na, newborns toh bahut sote hain! But agar baby bahut lambe time tak so raha hai aur doodh nahi pee raha, toh thoda dhyaan dena padega. Doc se ek baar pooch lena achha rahega. My niece used to sleep a lot too, par feed ke liye uth jaati thi.

Oh, this is something I'm curious about for my sister's baby. So, if a newborn is sleeping a lot, but still waking for feeds on time, that's normal, right? Just when they don't wake up for feeds is when it's too much?

Newborns usually sleep a lot, between 14 to 17 hours a day, but they wake up frequently for feeds. If your newborn is consistently sleeping for very long stretches (e.g., more than 4 hours) and missing feeds, it's good to check with your pediatrician. They can guide you best!

A newborn's rest is a blessing, as it helps in their growth. While they sleep much, one must ensure they are also feeding well. If a baby sleeps for excessively long periods without nourishment, it is wise to seek guidance from a healer or doctor. Keep a calm mind and observe.
