How much salt can a diabetic have?

My father was recently diagnosed with diabetes, and now everyone in the family is worried about his diet. He loves salty food, especially pickles. How much salt can a diabetic person safely have in a day?

Bro, my dad is diabetic and the doctor told him to cut down salt strictly because of blood pressure risks. Basically, less than one teaspoon a day is the limit. It is tough because Indian food is so bland without it, but you get used to it.

I am so tired all the time that I barely notice what I eat, but my mom constantly monitors my diabetic dad's salt intake. She hides the salt shaker! Apparently, they should only have about 2/3 of a teaspoon daily, which is like nothing.

My diabetologist clearly explained that diabetics have a high risk of developing hypertension, so salt intake must be limited to under 1,500 mg of sodium per day, which is about 3/4 teaspoon of regular salt. This includes hidden salt in pickles and papad too.

Since I have both high BP and diabetes, my doctor has put me on a very strict salt limit of less than 4-5 grams a day. Apart from reducing salt in cooking, I walk daily and get my kidney function tested regularly to stay safe.

For diabetic health, keeping sodium under 1.5 grams daily is recommended. Since we eat a lot of home-cooked vegetarian food, we easily control it by avoiding packaged snacks, pickles, and ready-made masalas which contain heavy sodium.
