How much rem sleep does a person need?

I'm trying to understand more about sleep cycles. My dad always says he just needs 5-6 hours, but I feel groggy if I don't get 8. How much REM sleep does a person generally need for optimal functioning?

Most healthy adults need about 1.5 to 2 hours of REM sleep every single night! It's the time when your brain is busy dreaming and organizing your thoughts. Sweet dreams and sleep tight!

Hey, don't let those smart sleep trackers make you anxious. An average person needs about 20% of their sleep to be REM, which happens naturally if you sleep peacefully for 7-8 hours. Just relax and shut your eyes, you're doing fine.

A good, undisturbed night's sleep is all you need, beta. Don't worry too much about measuring the parts of your sleep; your body knows how to take care of itself.

My son used to stay up late studying and his sleep tracker showed almost zero REM sleep, which made him very irritable. We made a rule to keep all gadgets outside the room by 10 PM. His REM sleep is back to a healthy 1.5 hours now.

Does anyone else find that their REM sleep drops significantly when they have even a single drink of alcohol? I noticed my tracker shows only 20 minutes of REM on those nights and it really scares me.
