How much rem sleep do you need by age?

My kids have different sleep patterns, and I wonder if their sleep needs vary. How much REM sleep do you need depending on your age? Is it different for children, teenagers, and adults?

As we grow older, our sleep naturally gets lighter and we don't get as much REM or deep sleep as we did in our youth. I used to worry about waking up early, but now I realize it's just a natural part of aging. Don't worry, just rest whenever your body demands.

Actually, yaar, kids and babies need a massive amount of REM sleep, like almost 50% of their sleep time. For adults like us, it drops down to around 20-25%. If you are older, it decreases even more, which is totally normal.

Yes, REM sleep requirements change drastically from infancy to old age. Adults only need about 20% of their total sleep to be REM. My tip is to maintain a cold room temperature; it naturally prolongs the REM and deep sleep stages as you age.

Do not trust random internet charts detailing age-wise REM sleep minutes. Sleep architecture is highly complex and unique to every individual. If you have concerns about your sleep cycles, get a professional sleep study done rather than guessing.

I read that newborns spend half their sleep in REM because their brains are growing so fast. By the time we hit college, it's just about 2 hours a night. So don't compare your sleep patterns with your younger siblings!
