How much rem core and deep sleep?

My sleep tracker gives me detailed reports, but I don't really understand what the numbers mean. It shows REM, core, and deep sleep. How much of each of these sleep stages is considered healthy for an adult?

During my recent checkup at Max Hospital, my doctor mentioned that adult sleep should ideally consist of 50% core, 20-25% REM, and 15-20% deep sleep. However, they stressed that individual patterns vary. It's best to ask your physician to explain your specific metrics.

My Apple Watch shows my core sleep is high but my deep sleep is barely 30 minutes. Does anyone else get these exact readings? I feel perfectly fine during the day, but seeing these numbers makes me super worried that I am not resting enough.

If your doctor allows, doing a 30-minute brisk walk or light workout in the evening can drastically improve your deep sleep metrics. Core sleep is just light sleep, but to push your body into deep, restorative phases, physical fatigue helps immensely.

I completely understand the anxiety of staring at these different sleep stages and wondering if your brain is recovering properly. I went through the exact same panic last year. Honestly, as long as you wake up feeling energetic, your sleep quality is likely perfectly fine.

My deep sleep was completely messed up when my thyroid levels were unbalanced, making me feel fatigued all day. If you notice persistent issues with your sleep stages, please get a thyroid panel done and discuss it with your doctor.
