How much rapid eye movement sleep is normal?

I've been tracking my sleep with an app and it shows different stages like REM and deep sleep. I'm curious about what's considered a normal amount of rapid eye movement sleep. My app sometimes shows very little, which worries me.

I recently got a smartband and noticed my REM sleep was only around 15%. I read that for most adults, around 20% to 25% of your total sleep should be REM. Don't worry too much about daily fluctuations, just focus on sleeping 7-8 hours!

Does anyone else get obsessed with their fitness tracker's sleep data? My app shows my REM sleep is barely 45 minutes some nights and it makes me so anxious. Is this normal or should I get a proper sleep study done?

I used to track my sleep cycle closely when I had extreme fatigue. Normally, about 90 to 120 minutes of REM sleep is what an adult gets per night. The best way to naturally improve it is by keeping a consistent bedtime and avoiding caffeine after 4 PM.

Yes, around 20% of your total sleep time is standard for REM. Just aim for good, deep sleep without mid-night screen time.

In our younger days, we didn't have these fancy watches telling us about REM or deep sleep. As long as you wake up feeling fresh and energetic in the morning, your body is getting exactly what it needs. Don't let technology stress you out.
