How much disability do you get for asthma?

My father has been dealing with asthma for a long time and now it's getting worse. We are wondering if there are any benefits or support available for people with a chronic condition like this. Is there some kind of disability percentage for it?

I used to panic thinking my severe asthma would make me completely unfit for work. But once I got the right inhalers prescribed, my life became totally normal. In India, mild asthma usually doesn't qualify for disability, so don't worry, it is very manageable.

To get disability benefits for asthma in India, you need a certificate from a government medical board showing at least 35% to 40% permanent impairment. This is usually determined by lung function tests like spirometry. You should visit a government hospital's chest specialist to start the process.

I was researching the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act for a project. For chronic respiratory conditions like severe asthma, government benefits are only given if the disability is certified as 40% or more. It seems like a very detailed legal and medical process.

Yes, it completely depends on your lung capacity tests at a government hospital. The percentage of disability is decided by the medical board.

Let's be realistic, you won't get any government disability allowance for normal asthma. Unless it is extremely severe, chronic, and has caused permanent lung damage verified by a government medical board, they won't issue a certificate. Better to focus on getting the right treatment.

My breathing was so bad last winter, I tried steam inhalation and ginger tea which helped a bit, but inhalers were what saved me. If your asthma is so bad that you can't work, definitely check the government guidelines for disability. I hope you find some relief soon.
