How much b12 should a diabetic take?

I have diabetes, and my doctor suggested I might need to take B12 supplements. I forgot to ask about the dosage during my last appointment. How much B12 should a diabetic person generally take?

As vegetarians, we already get very little B12 from our normal diet, and with diabetes, it gets even more complicated. You should be very careful with self-treating; talk to your dietitian about dairy options or fermented foods. They can guide you on whether you need a daily supplement of 2.4 mcg or more.

I manage both thyroid and blood sugar, and my doctor explained that metformin can sometimes lower B12 absorption over time. Please get your B12 and thyroid levels tested regularly every six months. Your doctor will adjust your specific dosage based on those test results instead of a generic plan.

Look, diabetes is not something you play around with by taking random vitamins from the internet. Metformin users often need B12, yes, but only your doctor can tell you the exact dosage after looking at your blood report. Go to the lab, get the test done, and show it to your physician.

My father was just diagnosed with diabetes and his doctor mentioned checking his B12 levels because of his new medicines. I am a bit confused about this. Does the diabetes medicine itself cause the deficiency, and should we ask for a supplement during his next visit?

I completely understand how overwhelming it feels to manage diabetes and then worry about nerve health and vitamins on top of it. It is totally normal to feel anxious about these things. Just discuss it openly with your doctor during your next checkup; they will guide you safely.

My sugar levels and sleep cycle are both a mess, and trying to calculate exact vitamin doses on zero sleep makes my head spin. Honestly, just let your diabetologist handle the math. They will write down the exact pill and you just have to swallow it with water, no stress.

I tried various herbal and home remedies for my diabetic neuropathy, but learned that B12 deficiency needs proper medical attention. Homemade curd and buttermilk are great for digestion, but if your doctor prescribes a B12 tablet due to metformin use, please take it regularly.
