How much amitriptyline for sleep?

My doctor prescribed amitriptyline for my chronic headaches, and I noticed it makes me really sleepy. I'm wondering if it can also be used just for sleep, and if so, what dose would be effective without causing too many side effects?

Hey, please don't take this medication on your own. Amitriptyline is a serious prescription drug and not a simple sleeping pill. If sleep is keeping you up, talk to me or a doctor, we will figure it out safely. Take care, okay?

I used to struggle with deep sleep too, but medications always have side effects. Try practicing Bhramari Pranayama for 10 minutes right before sleeping, it really calms the nervous system. Of course, check with your doctor before altering any prescribed doses.

Honestly, if I knew the magic dose to put me to sleep tonight, I would be sleeping instead of typing this at 2 AM. But jokes apart, please dont self-medicate with amitriptyline. That stuff is strong and will leave you feeling like a zombie the whole next day.

My doctor put me on a very low dose of 10mg of amitriptyline for sleep issues last year. It took a few weeks to adjust, but you absolutely cannot decide the dose yourself. Also, you must taper it off slowly under medical supervision when you stop, otherwise the rebound insomnia is terrible.

Dealing with poor sleep is very frustrating and draining. Please don't take any dose of this medicine without asking a doctor first. I hope you get some peaceful rest very soon.

When I had severe sleep issues, I went to a proper hospital and the specialist explained that amitriptyline is actually an antidepressant used in micro-doses for sleep. They will decide the dose based on your medical history. Please make an appointment and get a proper prescription.

I totally get it, sleepless nights can make you so desperate for anything that works. But amitriptyline can have intense side effects like extreme dry mouth and morning grogginess. Please discuss your struggle with a doctor so they can prescribe the safest option for you.

Beta, in my life I have seen many people relying on strong medicines for sleep, and it rarely ends well. A fixed routine, avoiding tea after 5 PM, and a quiet mind are much better. Do not take these heavy tablets without your doctor's permission.
