How many times do you fart in your sleep?

This is a bit embarrassing, but sometimes I wake up feeling a bit gassy. My friend joked about farting in sleep. I was wondering, actually how many times do people fart in their sleep on average? Is it a common thing?

I used to panic so much thinking something was seriously wrong with my digestion because of night gas! But my doctor told me it is completely normal to pass gas 10 to 20 times a day, including when we are asleep. Our muscles relax, so it just happens naturally.

It is very natural to pass gas at night as the body relaxes. If you feel it is too much or causing bloating, try drinking a glass of warm fennel water (saunf pani) before bed. Avoid heavy dinners or eating raw salads late in the evening as they cause extra gas.

Passing gas while sleeping is a basic bodily function, but if you have severe stomach pain or sudden weight loss with it, don't ignore it. I always go to a gastroenterologist at a proper hospital when in doubt. They can run simple tests to rule out any food intolerances.

At my age, my digestive system has a mind of its own, especially at night! Honestly, passing gas while sleeping is just a sign that your digestive tract is working. As long as it is not waking you up with cramps, just laugh it off and sleep well.

In old age, digestion becomes weak and gas naturally increases. It is common to pass wind at night. We always suggest chewing a small piece of ginger with a pinch of black salt after dinner to aid digestion, or having a cup of warm water.

Having PCOS often causes bloating and gut issues for me, so I get how uncomfortable gas can be. Passing gas at night is totally normal for everyone, but if you feel it's excessive, it could be related to hormonal imbalances or diet. Don't hesitate to mention it to your gynecologist or a dietitian.

Everyone does it, whether they admit it or not. The body releases built-up gas during deep sleep because the anal sphincter relaxes. Unless you're experiencing actual abdominal pain or diarrhea, there is zero reason to worry about this.

I can only share my personal experience, but I notice I pass more gas at night when I eat a lot of lentils or dairy for dinner. It's usually a normal thing that happens when the body relaxes during sleep. Changing my dinner choices slightly really helped me feel lighter.

My family physician explained that during sleep, the gastrointestinal system continues to process food and produce gas, which is naturally expelled as the body relaxes. On average, humans pass gas 13-21 times a day and night combined. It's a sign of a functioning gut microbiome.

Passing gas at night is normal and doesn't need any expensive medical tests or treatments. Before spending money on gastroenterology consultations, try basic dietary changes like keeping a gap of 2 hours between dinner and sleep. That costs absolutely nothing and works wonders.
