How long to wait for sex after stroke?

My uncle had a stroke about three months back and he's recovering well, but now he and my aunt are wondering about intimacy. The doctor hasn't really given them a clear answer on this. How long is it generally advised to wait after a stroke before resuming sexual activity?

This is such a scary thing to think about because you worry if any physical exertion will cause another attack. It is totally normal to feel anxious about returning to normal life. Just take things very slowly and wait until your doctor gives you a complete clearance.

In our family, elders always say to wait at least six months to a year before any heavy physical strain after a major illness. However, modern medical advice is what we must trust. Normally, doctors look at your recovery progress and blood pressure stability before giving the go-ahead.

Generally, if you can climb two flights of stairs without getting short of breath or having chest pain, your body is ready for physical intimacy. However, since a stroke involves blood pressure and brain health, you must get your neurologist's approval first. Go slow and communicate openly with your partner.

It took my husband and me a long time to feel emotionally ready for this after his stroke last year. The fear of something going wrong was always in the back of our minds. Please give yourself time to heal emotionally first, the physical part can wait.

Honestly, I have been feeling so nervous about this too since my recovery started. Did anyone else feel a sudden spike in heart rate or headache when they tried to get intimate again? It is quite stressful to think about.

Since managing my diabetes, I know how crucial blood flow and nerve health are, especially after a stroke. You need to make sure your blood pressure and blood sugar are completely stable before putting physical stress on your body. Please discuss this with your physician during your next checkup.

Your cardiovascular fitness plays a huge role in recovery after a stroke. If your doctor has cleared you for light cardio like daily brisk walking, it is a good sign that your body can handle mild physical exertion. But definitely don't rush it without clinical advice.
