REM sleep usually gets longer as the night goes on. In the beginning, it's just a few minutes, but by morning, it can be 20-30 minutes long. Total around 20-25% of your sleep, I think.
If you're worried about your sleep, sometimes they suggest a sleep study. Those can be a bit expensive, so try to track your sleep patterns manually for a few days first. There are apps too, but good to know what you're getting into.
Proper REM sleep helps a lot with recovery after workouts. I notice when I don't get enough, my gym performance dips. Try to have a consistent sleep schedule and maybe avoid heavy meals close to bedtime for better sleep quality. Exercise also helps!
For kids, REM sleep is even more crucial for brain development. My son had some sleep issues, and our pediatrician said we need to ensure he gets enough uninterrupted sleep so his REM cycles aren't cut short. Make sure you're getting deep sleep too.
My doctor explained that REM sleep is really important for memory and learning. It starts short, about 10 minutes in the first cycle, but can extend up to an hour in later cycles, making up about 25% of adult sleep. Kids need more, apparently!
