How long does iud pain last?

I just got an IUD inserted, and I'm experiencing some cramping and discomfort. The doctor said it's normal, but I want to know how long this pain typically lasts after the procedure. Will it be a few days or weeks?

My gynaecologist explained that mild cramping and backaches are normal for the first 3 to 6 months as the uterus adjusts to the IUD. She told me that while initial sharp pain should settle within a few days, sporadic cramping during periods is common. If the pain is severe or accompanied by a foul discharge, it requires immediate clinical checkup.

The initial cramping should settle in 3 to 7 days, but if it continues, a pelvic ultrasound is needed to check the IUD position, which costs around 800 to 1200 rupees. Budget for a quick follow-up checkup with your doctor after a month just to ensure it hasn't slipped. It is better to spend a little on a checkup than deal with severe pain later.

Do not rely on online forums telling you to drink herbal teas to cure severe IUD pain. While mild cramping for a few weeks is normal, persistent severe pain can indicate improper insertion or infection. You must get a physical examination done by your gynaecologist to verify the placement.

The moderate pain usually lasts for 2 to 3 days, and light spotting can go on for a few weeks. I had my insertion done at Apollo, and the doctor clearly told me to come back if the pain didn't subside after a week. Ask your doctor clearly about what symptoms are normal and what are warning signs.

Honestly, for me, the first two days after insertion were pretty rough and felt like bad period cramps. I just used a hot water bag and took a painkiller my doc gave me. By the fourth day, the pain was almost completely gone, but I still get random light cramps sometimes.

I am planning to get an IUD next month but I am really scared of the pain during and after insertion. Is the pain manageable with normal rest, or does it make it difficult to go to work or study for a few days?

I totally get it, dealing with uterine cramping can be so exhausting and uncomfortable. Usually, the sharp discomfort fades away within 48 hours, though you might feel mild backaches for a few weeks. Take plenty of rest, use a heating pad, and treat yourself gently.
