How long can you go without thyroid medication?

I sometimes forget to take my thyroid medicine, especially when travelling. My friend said it's really bad to miss doses. How long can I actually go without taking my thyroid medication before it starts causing problems?

Agreed with others, missing it for a day or two is fine, but don't stop it completely without asking your doctor.

I stopped my thyroxine pills for two weeks thinking I was cured, and my TSH shot up to 45. I felt extremely exhausted, cold, and depressed; please don't make the same mistake I did.

I ignored my thyroid medication for a month because I felt fine, but then I started getting severe hair fall and joint pain. Please get a proper thyroid panel test done and consult your doctor before changing anything.

My mother always tells me to eat healthy and take home remedies, but for my thyroid, she also says never to skip the daily pill. The hormone level takes a few weeks to drop, so missing one day won't hurt, but stopping it entirely is not safe.

I was researching this because my roommate keeps forgetting her pills. Apparently, the medicine has a long half-life, so nothing major happens in 2-3 days, but after a week, the symptoms start crawling back.

My endocrinologist explained that thyroxine has a half-life of about 7 days. This means if you stop taking it, the hormone levels in your blood will decrease very gradually, and you'll likely feel the full negative effects only after 2 to 3 weeks.

As someone managing hypothyroidism for 10 years, I can tell you that consistency is key. You must get your TSH, T3, and T4 tested every 3 to 6 months so your doctor can adjust the dosage properly.

It is not safe to stop your thyroid medication on your own under any circumstances. Always consult your doctor and get a fresh blood test done to see if your body actually needs a dosage change.

Do not believe online forums claiming you can replace thyroid hormones with specific diets or coconut oil. Thyroid hormone is essential for metabolic functions, so verify any changes to your medication schedule only with an endocrinologist.

If you stop the pill, your metabolism slows down and you start gaining weight even if you are just looking at food, which is a foodie's worst nightmare! Keep taking that little pill every morning on an empty stomach.
