How long can you go without sleep before you die?

A news report I saw mentioned a person who hadn't slept for a very long time. It made me wonder, what's the absolute limit? How many days can a human actually go without sleeping before it gets critical?

Severe sleep deprivation can lead to major heart complications and extreme blood pressure spikes. I once ignored my severe insomnia and ended up in the emergency ward, so please see a doctor immediately if you cannot sleep.

Going without sleep for more than 10 days can be fatal, but your body will usually crash before that. Try rubbing warm sesame oil on your soles and drinking warm milk, but do get professional help if you've been awake for days.

I completely understand how scary it is to have these thoughts when you can't sleep, I've been there and panicked too. Please know that your body's natural survival instinct will make you fall asleep long before any fatal damage happens.

Sleeplessness really messes with your hormones and health in the long run. While direct death from sleep deprivation is rare because the brain eventually forces you to sleep, you must take care of your health and seek a doctor's help.

Well, science says about 11 days, but honestly, after just 24 hours of no sleep, I feel like a walking mummy anyway! Don't test these limits, your bed is waiting for you.
