How long after fever breaks are you contagious?

My son had a fever for a few days, and it just broke this morning. He's feeling a lot better now, but I'm wondering when it's safe for him to go back to school without infecting other children. How long after a fever breaks is someone usually still contagious?

Keep a gap of 24 hours after the fever is completely gone before you hit the gym. Focus on lots of fluids and light home-cooked meals during this recovery window to rebuild your strength.

You are typically contagious for at least 24 hours after your fever breaks naturally without any fever-reducing medicine. Don't rush back to the office or gym before that 24-hour mark.

The general medical consensus is to wait 24 hours fever-free without medication before ending isolation. However, depending on the viral or bacterial cause, a doctor's advice is always the best way to be certain.

Just stay isolated at home for one full day after your temperature returns to normal. It is a simple and free way to make sure your kids and family members don't catch the same infection.

While 24 hours is the common guideline, some viral infections can be contagious for longer. It is safest to consult your family physician to get checked before resuming normal public activities.
