How large of a kidney stone can pass?

My doctor said I have a small kidney stone, and we're hoping it passes naturally. I'm a bit nervous about the pain. What is generally the maximum size of a kidney stone that can pass through the urinary tract on its own?

Normally, stones smaller than 4mm or 5mm can pass on their own if you drink buckets of water. I had to cut down on my favourite salted snacks and spinach for a bit when I had one. Anything bigger than 6mm might need a doctor's help, so watch out!

Don't take this lightly. I once ignored a 6mm stone thinking it would pass with water, and ended up in the emergency room with severe kidney swelling. If your stone is larger than 5mm or if you are in pain, go see a doctor immediately.

Generally, stones under 5mm pass naturally, saving you surgery costs. For larger ones, a simple ultrasound costing around 800 to 1200 rupees will tell you the exact size. It's better to spend on a scan now than deal with emergency hospitalization bills later.

Beta, mere anubhav se bataun toh 4-5 mm tak ka pathar bina doctor ke paas gaye nikal jata hai, bas thodi mehnat aur pani peena padta hai. Agar 7-8 mm se bada hai toh takleef badh sakti hai. Chinta mat karo, par doctor ki salaah zaroor le lo.

My daughter had a small 3mm stone and the doctor said it would pass easily with liquid diet and coconut water, and it did. If the doctor says it's small, keep them hydrated. But if the pain is high or the stone is big, please don't wait at home.
