How is type 2 diabetes diagnosed?

My recent blood sugar report was a bit high, and the doctor suggested I might be pre-diabetic or even have type 2. What are the usual tests or procedures they do to confirm a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes? I want to be prepared.

To diagnose Type 2 diabetes, a physician will look at your fasting blood glucose levels and your three-month average, which is the HbA1c test. If the HbA1c is 6.5% or higher on two separate tests, it indicates diabetes. Please consult a qualified doctor rather than trying to interpret borderline results on your own.

I agree with the others here. A simple fasting blood sugar test and an HbA1c test are the standard ways doctors diagnose Type 2 diabetes.

Generally, we advise getting a fasting blood sugar test done after 8 hours of water-only fasting, and an HbA1c test. If your HbA1c comes between 5.7 and 6.4, it's prediabetes, and 6.5 or above is diabetes. It is a very simple blood test that any local lab can do quickly.

I ignored my mild fatigue and didn't get tested on time, which eventually led to nerve numbness in my feet. Don't make that mistake. If you have symptoms like frequent urination or blurred vision, get your fasting sugar and HbA1c checked immediately by a proper medical doctor.

My fasting sugar came slightly high once and I panicked, thinking my life was over. But my doctor explained it was just prediabetes and completely manageable with a few diet changes. The diagnostic process is just a simple, painless blood test, so please don't stress about it.

When I went for my annual health checkup at a reputed hospital, they ran a fasting glucose and HbA1c panel. The specialist there sat down with me and explained exactly what the numbers meant. I highly recommend going to a good clinic and asking your doctor to clarify the next steps.
