How is diabetes diagnosed?

For my son, the doctor did a simple fasting blood glucose test first. They also check HbA1c to see the average sugar levels of the last three months. It is very routine and nothing to be scared of, just a quick prick.
Like my thyroid checks, diabetes also needs a proper blood draw. You can't rely on those small home glucometers for the first diagnosis, go to a proper lab. It's always best to get a full panel done yearly so you can catch any changes early.
Actually there are mainly three tests: Fasting blood sugar, Post Prandial which is done 2 hours after eating, and HbA1c. I always tell people to get these done from a good lab in the morning before eating anything. Don't worry, once you get the reports, a general physician can guide you on the next steps.
They will look at your blood sugar numbers. When I went for my hypertension checkup, my doctor also added an HbA1c test just to be safe. Keeping an eye on your daily physical activity and diet helps a lot alongside these regular medical checks.
Take a deep breath, it is just a simple blood test done after fasting overnight. Keep your mind calm and get the checkup done. Whatever the results, stay positive because modern medicine and a peaceful mind can manage everything beautifully.
