How hard is it to get disability for diabetes?

My father has had severe diabetes for years and it's really impacting his ability to work. Someone mentioned he might be eligible for disability benefits. How hard is it actually to get disability for diabetes in India?

Getting a disability certificate for diabetes in India is not straightforward because diabetes itself is classified as a lifestyle disease. It is only considered if there are severe, permanent complications like diabetic retinopathy causing vision loss or renal failure. You must get evaluated by a government medical board to check your eligibility.

If they gave disability certificates just for having high sugar, half of our uncles and aunties would be on the list! Jokes apart, the government only certifies it if there is serious organ damage. Better to eat less sweets and avoid dealing with government babus for certificates.

To be practical, unless there is a documented 40% or more permanent impairment due to diabetes complications, the government will not issue a certificate. Save your time and focus on managing your health through proper medical insurance and regular corporate wellness checks instead.

Just having high blood sugar or blood pressure won't qualify you for disability benefits. The focus should really be on regular checkups and lifestyle changes to prevent those extreme complications in the first place. Keep monitoring your health closely so you never reach that stage.

I know how stressful it is to think about long-term diabetes complications affecting your livelihood and future. It is a very valid worry, but getting official status requires meeting strict criteria of organ damage. Please take it one day at a time and speak with a supportive doctor.

I was looking this up recently for my granddad, and it turns out just having diabetes doesn't count. You need to show that it has caused a high percentage of physical impairment, like severe nerve damage or amputation. It sounds like a lot of paperwork and official board reviews.
