How fast do cavities grow?

I had a minor toothache, and my dentist said it's a cavity that needs filling. I feel like it just appeared. Once a cavity starts, how fast does it typically grow and get bigger?

In my sixty years, I have realized that teeth decay very slowly if you take basic care of them. A cavity won't grow into a major issue within weeks, it takes many months or years of negligence. Just rinse your mouth after meals and don't worry too much.

Because of my PCOS, I am always cautious about inflammation in my body, including oral health. Cavities generally grow slowly over several months, but hormonal changes can sometimes make gum issues worse. It's always safer to consult a dentist early rather than waiting for it to grow.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps keep your overall body, including teeth, in good shape. Cavities take months to grow, but a bad diet accelerates it. Staying active and eating fresh, whole foods instead of processed sugars will slow down any potential tooth decay.

I had a tiny speck on my molar last year and thought it would take years to grow, but within six months it became a deep cavity that started hurting. It grows faster once it gets past the enamel, so don't ignore even small spots thinking you have plenty of time.

My 8-year-old son developed a cavity that grew surprisingly fast because of his constant habit of eating chocolates. In kids, the enamel is thinner so it can grow within 3 to 6 months. For adults, it is slower, but still, getting it filled early saves a lot of pain later.
