How fast can diabetes develop?

My father was diagnosed with diabetes very suddenly. It almost seemed like it happened overnight. How fast can diabetes actually develop in a person? Are there early signs I should look out for myself?

I got my diabetes diagnosed almost twenty years ago, and looking back, the signs like dry mouth and tiredness were developing slowly over 3-4 years. Don't be scared of it, beta. If you manage your daily walk and food habits early, you can live a very long and happy life.

Type 1 diabetes can develop rapidly over a few weeks or months, especially in younger individuals. Type 2, however, typically progresses silently over several years of insulin resistance. My doctor emphasized that HbA1c testing is the most reliable way to catch this pre-diabetic phase before it fully develops.

With Type 2, it's usually a slow creep over years, but modern sedentary lifestyles can accelerate it. I use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) occasionally to track my spikes after different meals, which is super eye-opening. Tracking your fasting glucose annually is a great habit to stay ahead of it.

It usually takes quite a long time to develop, so you often have plenty of time to make small changes. Try not to worry too much. Just a simple blood test at any local clinic can give you clear answers and peace of mind.

Having PCOS, insulin resistance is something I have to monitor constantly, as it can gradually turn into Type 2 diabetes over a few years if ignored. It's a slow process but can sneak up on you. I highly recommend getting regular fasting insulin tests done to be safe.

Unless you are talking about Type 1 which can crash the party pretty fast, Type 2 takes its sweet time—usually years of us ignoring our sweet cravings! So you won't wake up tomorrow suddenly diabetic just because of one extra piece of gulab jamun. Just get tested and skip the daily dessert!

Since I have thyroid issues, my metabolism is already slow, and my doctor warned me that metabolic changes can gradually lead to high sugar over a few years. It's best to get your HbA1c and thyroid panel done every six months. Regular follow-ups with your doctor will keep everything in check.
