How does social media affect mental health positively?

Everyone talks about the negative side of social media, but I was wondering if there are any good effects too? Like, can it actually help with loneliness or finding support groups? My friend feels very low sometimes and I'm trying to see if there's a positive way to use these platforms.

For me, social media was actually a blessing when I was diagnosed with PCOS. Finding support groups where other girls shared their daily struggles made me feel so much less alone. Just be careful not to believe every random influencer diet plan, but for pure moral support, it really helps.

I have seen many people find great communities online. If you use it to learn new hobbies or connect with old school friends, it can bring a lot of joy. The key is to curate your feed consciously so you only see positive, motivating things.

Honestly, memes on Instagram literally get me through exam stress. It is so nice to see that thousands of other college students are struggling with the exact same syllabus. It is like a huge virtual study group where we just laugh at our own pain.

I used to feel very isolated during my postpartum phase, but finding mental health advocates on Twitter helped me normalize my feelings. My tip is to actively mute keywords that trigger comparison or jealousy. Once you clean your feed, it becomes a very safe space for self-care tips.

When I discussed this during my therapy session, my doctor mentioned that social media can democratize mental health awareness. It helps break the cultural taboos we have in India about seeing a therapist. However, they also warned that active engagement is key—passive scrolling still causes anxiety.

I was just reading some articles on this topic, and it seems online support groups are great for rare health conditions. People who can't find others like them in their physical neighborhood can easily find a global family. It is quite fascinating how technology connects minds.
