How does rheumatoid arthritis affect the skin?

Living with rheumatoid arthritis for many years, lately I've noticed some changes in my skin, like dryness and rashes. Could these be related to my RA? I'm wondering if rheumatoid arthritis can directly affect the skin.

It can cause firm lumps under the skin called rheumatoid nodules, especially near the elbows, and sometimes even rashes from blood vessel inflammation. I ignored early skin changes thinking it was just a regular allergy, and it got much worse. Please get a proper checkup immediately if you notice anything unusual.

I didn't know that arthritis could actually show up on the skin too. Does this mean the medicines cause rashes, or is it the disease itself doing it? If someone could explain, it would really help me understand.

Yes, RA can cause nodules under your skin and even ulcers if the inflammation affects small blood vessels. It is a systemic issue, so don't just apply random creams on it. Go to your rheumatologist and tell them about these skin changes right away.

I read that the inflammation can cause dry skin or rashes, which sounds really annoying to manage. Honestly, I try to combat dry skin by eating healthy fats like walnuts and avocados, but for RA skin issues, regular skincare won't cut it. Definitely ask your doctor for a proper medical cream.

It can cause painless lumps called nodules under the skin and sometimes rashes due to vasculitis. Definitely mention this to your doctor.

My mother recently had these purple spots on her skin, and we found out it was due to inflammation of blood vessels linked to her RA. Once the doctor adjusted her biological drugs, the skin cleared up beautifully. Keep an eye on any sudden skin changes because they reflect what is happening inside.

When the body has high heat and inflammation, it often shows up as skin rashes or dry patches. Doing daily pranayama like Sheetali can help calm the system, but please continue your medical treatments for arthritis to keep the internal symptoms under control.

According to my rheumatologist, about 20 to 30 percent of patients get rheumatoid nodules, which are lumps under the skin. He also explained that severe inflammation can lead to rheumatoid vasculitis, which causes painful spots on the fingertips or legs. It is a sign that the disease activity needs to be controlled better.

For mild dry skin patches, applying pure coconut oil can give some gentle relief and soothe the area. But if you are getting painful red spots or hard lumps under the skin, please don't rely on home remedies. You must show it to your treating doctor to adjust your main arthritis medication.
