How does music affect sleep?

For a few months now, I've been struggling to fall asleep properly. My cousin told me that listening to some soft music before bed could help. I wanted to know if there's any truth to this and how it might impact my sleep quality.

I tried listening to soothing binaural beats on YouTube last night to sleep, but it actually made me overthink my heartbeat and I couldn't drift off at all. Does anyone else feel more awake or anxious when listening to sleep music in the dark? Or is it just my mind playing games?

If you are playing high-energy songs before bed, obviously sleep will run away. Keep it soft, maybe some light flute or rain sounds on low volume. But if you have chronic insomnia, don't rely only on headphones, get your thyroid or stress levels checked by a doctor.

My sleep specialist explained that music with a tempo of around 60 beats per minute helps the heart rate align with a resting state. This triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, making it easier to fall into deep sleep. He advised me to avoid using earphones while sleeping as it can irritate the ear canal.

My sleep was highly disturbed due to hormonal imbalances, so I started playing soft nature sounds in the background. It helps calm my racing thoughts a bit, though it is not a cure-all. You still have to manage your diet and general routine, but it is a gentle way to relax the body.

When I went to Max Hospital for my chronic sleep apnea issues, the doctor said mild relaxing music is great for sleep hygiene but cannot fix physical airway blockages. If you are constantly waking up tired, please go to a proper clinic and get a sleep study done. Don't self-diagnose with just apps and playlists.

I always play light instrumental music on a sleep timer for about 30 minutes every night. It blocks out the annoying traffic noise from the street below my building and helps me wind down easily. For me, it has completely changed my sleep routine for the better.
