How does methotrexate work for rheumatoid arthritis?

My doctor just started me on Methotrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis. I've read a bit about it, but I'm looking for a clearer understanding. How does this drug actually function in the body to manage the condition?

I was terrified when I saw 'chemotherapy' written on the leaflet. But my doc reassured me that for RA, it is used in a very tiny weekly dose just to calm down joint inflammation. It works safely.

I delayed starting methotrexate because of fear, and now my finger joints have got permanent damage. Please trust your rheumatologist and start the treatment to protect your joints.

My mom takes this every Monday. It basically blocks certain enzymes to stop her immune system from attacking her knees. She feels much better now.

It works by suppressing the overactive immune response that causes pain and swelling in your joints.

My doctor prescribed methotrexate, but I am scared of the hair thinning side effect. Has anyone else faced this, or is it rare at low doses?
