How does mental health differ from behavioral health?

I've heard the terms 'mental health' and 'behavioral health' being used sometimes interchangeably, but also sometimes distinctly. I'm trying to understand if there's a specific difference between them, or if one is a subset of the other. Can someone clarify this for me?

I completely understand how confusing these terms can be when you are already feeling anxious. Mental health focuses on your state of mind, while behavioral health looks at your daily habits and coping mechanisms.

Think of it this way: mental health is about your internal biology and emotions, like chemical imbalances causing depression. Behavioral health is how those feelings translate into actions, like stress leading to drinking or overeating.

From a fitness perspective, mental health is your psychological well-being, while behavioral health includes habits like sleep hygiene, regular exercise, and eating patterns that directly affect your physical body.

While mental health is about your thoughts and brain chemistry, behavioral health is about modifying actions—like replacing stress-eating with a brisk evening walk to help clear your head.

I totally get it, the jargon can make things sound so complicated! Simply put, one is about what you feel inside, and the other is about how you act on those feelings in your daily life.

For mental health, you might need a psychiatrist for therapy or medication. For behavioral health, simple adjustments like setting a strict bedtime and limiting screen time can resolve a lot of issues.
