How does kidney dialysis work?

My father has been advised to start kidney dialysis soon, and our family is trying to understand the whole process better. It sounds very complicated and a bit scary. Can someone explain in simple terms how kidney dialysis actually works and what to expect?

Dialysis basically acts as an artificial kidney. When the kidneys fail, a machine filters waste, extra salts, and fluid from your blood to keep the body in balance. It requires regular hospital visits, but with a good routine, patients manage to lead stable lives.

My father was advised to start dialysis and I am incredibly scared about how painful it might be. Does the blood purification process make them feel very weak afterwards? I would really appreciate hearing how others managed the initial sessions.

I totally get it, the thought of starting dialysis can be absolutely terrifying for the family. It is a process where blood is gently cleaned through a filter and returned to the body. It can cause some fatigue, but seeing them feel cleaner and healthier makes the struggle worth it.

I have been on dialysis for two years now. The machine takes blood from a vascular access, cleans it, and puts it back. My tip is to strictly follow your fluid limit and phosphorus restrictions between sessions, it makes the process much smoother and less tiring.

While dialysis is a medical procedure to clean the blood, keeping up light physical activity like short gentle walks on non-dialysis days is great for circulation. Of course, always clear any exercise plans with your nephrologist first.

Since uncontrolled diabetes is a major cause of kidney failure, managing blood sugar is vital during dialysis. You have to be extremely careful with your protein intake and potassium-rich foods as advised by your clinical dietitian. Never self-manage your diet here.
