How does iodine affect the thyroid?

My doctor recently advised me to keep an eye on my iodine intake because of some thyroid concerns. I'm trying to understand the link better. Can someone explain how iodine specifically affects the thyroid and its overall function?

Iodine is like the raw material your thyroid gland uses to make thyroid hormones. Both too little and too much iodine can cause issues like goiter or thyroid dysfunction. In India, most of us get enough from iodized salt, so don't take extra supplements without a doctor's advice.

Man, my thyroid is so out of whack that I am awake at 3 AM reading about iodine. Apparently, it is a delicate balance. Too much of it and my thyroid goes crazy, too little and I am a zombie. Wish my body came with an instruction manual!

If you suspect iodine is affecting your thyroid, just get a simple TSH blood test done over the weekend. It takes 5 minutes and gives you a clear picture. Don't waste time self-diagnosing or cutting out iodized salt based on internet articles.

I read that sea salt doesn't have enough iodine and can cause thyroid issues. I switched to rock salt recently and now I feel tired all the time. Has anyone else experienced thyroid fluctuations after changing their salt type?

Don't stress over this. Just stick to regular iodized salt in your daily cooking as we've done for generations. There is no need to worry about iodine levels unless a doctor specifically tells you after looking at your blood reports. Take care, brother.
