How does heat help back pain?

My lower back has been acting up a lot lately, especially after long hours at my desk. My physio suggested applying heat packs, and it does feel better, but I'm curious why. How exactly does heat application help relieve back pain?

Heat is wonderful for chronic back pain because it dilates the blood vessels, which increases blood flow and brings fresh oxygen to the sore muscles. It also helps relax those tight muscle knots. Just make sure not to use it on a fresh injury or swelling, where ice is actually better.

Yes, a warm heating pad really relaxes the stiff back muscles almost instantly. It works great for daily fatigue.

My grandmother always advised applying warm sesame oil followed by a hot water bag for back aches. However, my doctor mentioned that heat should only be used for muscle stiffness, and if there is any sharp nerve pain, we must get a proper checkup instead.

Thermotargeted heat therapy stimulates sensory receptors in the skin, which actually blocks the transmission of pain signals to the brain. My orthopedist explained that it also improves tissue elasticity. He advised me to keep the temperature moderate to avoid any skin burns.

I literally just got over a bad lower back spasm last week. Using an electric heating gel bag for 15 minutes twice a day was a lifesaver; it loose up the spasms and let me stretch a bit. Highly recommend it if your pain is from sitting too long at a desk.

Hey, don't stress too much about the back pain, it is super common. Just lie down, put on a hot gel pack, and watch your favorite show. It really helps soothe the muscles and takes the tension away. You will feel much better by tomorrow, chill!

Bro, after sitting through 4 hours of lectures, my back is totally wrecked. A simple hot water bag is my absolute go-to because it just melts the stiffness away. It is cheap and works like magic every single time.

I was researching online about whether heat or ice is better for posture-related back ache, and most articles say heat is best for chronic muscle tension. It seems it really boosts blood circulation to help heal the area. Going to try my heating pad tonight!

I am experiencing mild upper back pain for the first time and was wondering if a hot shower would help? Or should I buy one of those electric heating belts? Please let me know what works best for beginners.

Look, if your back is stiff from sitting all day, hot water therapy will soothe those tight muscles. But don't keep heating it if the pain is severe or shooting down your leg. If it's a slip disc, heat won't solve it, you must see a doctor.
